Watch Martha’s Diabetes Video on Everyday Health
Meet Deborah – a 51 year old woman with diabetes. She was diagnosed 12 years ago and has been having trouble staying motivated with her treatment plan.Everyday Health contacted me to meet with Deborah to help get her back on track with her diet, exercise and medication regimen. So off to Queens I went (in the middle of a blizzard last winter). Watch my 4 part video series.
Meet Deborah
Deborah was a lovely woman who had initially been doing well on her diabetes treatment plan – however lately had been “falling off the wagon” when it came to taking care of herself. She was frustrated with her peripheral neuropathy and the fact that she never gets a vacation when it comes to diabetes. It is a 24/7 disease. She was seeking help in the following areas: 1. staying consistent with her medication regimen (insulin pump) 2. staying mobile 3. ways to get up and move more 4. learning more about her diet.
Meal Time
Watch my pantry raid in Deborah’s cabinets. We then talked about portion control of carbs. Her portion sizes were actually pretty good! However one of her problem areas was not eating on a regular schedule. This is especially important for people with diabetes to help maintain good blood sugar control.
Where Fitness Fits in
Deborah used to be very active on her job as an electrician. Unfortunately she had to retire due to peripheral neuropathy pain in her feet. This is a complication of diabetes. We talked about how keeping her sugars in good control can help to alleviate pain. We also talked about ways to stay fit without putting too much pressure on her feet. Luckily Deborah likes to swim and will look into a local YMCA.
Sticking with the Plan
I gave Deborah advice on how to stay motivated to be more consistent with her medications, diet and exercise plan. We talked about motivating factors. Staying active for her grandchildren was a major motivating force for Deborah.
