New Food Finds at Bed Bath and Beyond

bbb The next time you’re in Bed Bath and Beyond picking up a shower curtain or other household item, check out the food department. I hadn’t been there in a while and was surprised to see a newly renovated area dedicated to food products.  There were many healthy items and some I had never seen before. I found several new “mini” products . I love these because you can take them on the go with you AND they are good for people with portion control issues of certain foods … me. The next time you’re in Bed Bath and Beyond, walk through this section and check out my finds.

Mini packs of nuts
Artisana Raw Walnut Butter with Cashews. I never had walnut butter before. I liked it – it was different. Make sure you knead the package before eating it so it’s not too oily.
Portion: 1 mini pack/cal: 205/Fat gm:19/Sat fat gm:2/Carb gm:4/Protein gm: 5/Dietary Fiber: 2 gm/sodium 1 mg

Artisana Raw Pecan Butter with  Cashews. This one was also very good.
Portion: 1 mini pack/cal: 213/Fat gm:20/Sat fat gm:2/Carb gm:4/Protein gm: 4/Dietary Fiber: 3 gm/sodium: 1 mg

Wild Friends Almond Butter Vanilla Expresso. This one was delicious, probably because the vanilla favor had a hint of sweetness (contains some agave). I would probably do some damage if I had a whole jar in my apartment. Look at all the other delicious flavors they have!!! website
Portion: 1 mini pack/Cal: 180/Fat gm:16/Sat fat gm:1/Carb gm:8/Protein gm: 6/Dietary Fiber: 3 gm/Sodium: 40 mg.

They also had different kinds of Justin’s nut butters in individual packs. I’ve blogged about these in the past.  BTW – check out Justin’s 80 calorie nuts packs (sold on their website)

Energy bars

There was a huge selection of energy bars – most of which I’ve seen before (but GREAT prices!). I did IMG_7570 find a new mini bar: Detour Smart (gluten free, high protein, low sugar) apple cinnamon flavor. It tasted ok, not great – but I liked the nutritional profile.
Portion: one bar/Cal:130/Fat gm:2.5/Sat fat gm:.5/Carb gm:18/Protein gm: 10/Dietary Fiber: 3 gm/Sodium: 100mg

Other stuff

Flavored vinegars. I’m a huge fan of flavored vinegars. They’re a great way to add flavor without fat or calories to any dish – from salads to chicken. I love making chicken sautéed with a little olive oil and fig vinegar. I had been having a hard time finding this vinegar. Who would have thought I would find it in BB&B. Also found this mini bottle of white truffle balsamic vinegar!

Flavored oils – huge selection. A great way to add flavor instead of your usual olive oil.

Wild Garden individual packs of hummus Add some carrots or a few crackers and you have a great snack. Tastes good too! 3 different flavors.
Portion: 1 pack/Cal: 63/Fat gm:3/Sat fat gm:0/Carb gm:17/Protein gm: 6/Dietary Fiber: 1 gm/Sodium:120mg

IMG_7584

Butternut squash pasta sauce. I didn’t try it – but it looked really good … and healthy.  A change from the usual marinara sauce.
Portion: ½ cup/Cal: 100/Fat gm:4/Sat fat gm:2.5/Carb gm:17/Protein gm: 1/Dietary Fiber: 3 gm/Sodium:358mg (kind of high)

Simply Sprouted Way Better Black Bean Tortilla Chips (large bag) Beans again … with flaxseed, corn and quinoa.
Portion:1 oz, 11 chips/Cal: 130/Fat gm:6/Sat fat gm:.5/Carb gm:15/Protein gm: 2/Dietary Fiber: 3 gm/Sodium: 80 mg

Fun stuff?

Beans. I bet many of you haven’t thought of beans as “fun”, but I liked the label on this brand: Christmas Lima beans.  Beans are a great source of fiber,  can help to lower cholesterol and contain disease fighting anti-oxidants. If nothing else, the picture of the woman on the front makes it worth buying! IMG_7580

Amusing and/or helpful gadgets

There was a large area of food related gadgets and tools all to make eating fruits and vegetables easier. I found some of them quite amusing. Does anyone really need a “string bean cutter” or tomato stem remover? But if gadgets help you increase your intake of fruits or veggies, I’m all for them! Here are some of the gadgets I found (and there were MANY of them):

avocado slicer
apple slicer/corer
citrus peeler
tomato stem remover
garlic crusher
onion googles
watermelon slicer
strawberry stem remover photo-73
banana saver

Lastly this Food Pod steamer might help your kids start to like eating veggies. Very strange looking, but practical!  This food pod will let you simultaneously gather, remove, and drain foods from boiling water or steam without burning your fingers. Its flexible design allows the pod to compress to fit any size pot
